You could say that I came to Yoga through dance, since I met my first teacher, Kathleen Hunt, in the University of Washington's dance department. But it was some years after I met her when, inspired by her equanimity, I took her Yoga class. This Yoga was hard to do and had its own language, one completely new to me. But it made sense, and I got stronger. In 1994, I moved to San Francisco. Beset with a series of frozen shoulders, I was determined to heal myself with Yoga. I did so, with a whole lot of adho mukha svanasana, practicing on my own with some guidance from a coverless copy of Richard Teitelbaum's Be Young with Yoga. When in '96 I finally found Susannah Bruder, a teacher who was all about the practice, I rejoiced! I've been practicing with her ever since: she's my mentor. I graduated from Susannah's 6-month Teacher Training at Yoga Sita in spring of 2006 and began teaching. It's my hope to pass on the tradition that Susannah and her teacher, Zhander Remete, and his teachers, all the way back to where Yoga began.
In my classes, you'll find folks of all descriptions and Yoga experience -- men, women, good and healthy, recovering from injury or illness, pregnant, parenting -- practicing together with some amount of joy and sense of relief. Because we all practice together, some may be doing something completely different from the rest of the class, and it may be you! But that's OK, it's a Yoga prescription. My teaching background supports the fact that the practice touches us all differently. If you would like private lessons, contact me and we'll discuss.
Of course I am interested in things other than Yoga classes, like my beautiful wonderful dog Kittery, music (I sing and play some instruments), food (I used to own a coffee shop where I was the baker), books, and bikes, not necessarily in that order.
I honor Soul, so please bring yours to class.
